Eight cancers

Organ Cancers

A Different Cancer in Every Organ

Each organ grows its own real-world cancer with its own fight, rules and weak point. The Nasal Passage, Lungs and Bloodstream share the classic tumor parts; the five deeper organs each have a fully unique fight.

Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Organ 1 · Nasal Passage

A lumpy core ringed by satellite nodules that shield it and bud clone cells. Destroy the nodules, then the core.

  • Hint: Destroy the nodules shielding the tumor, then the tumor itself
  • 4 nodules at stage 1, +2 per stage (8 at stage 3)
  • While any nodule lives, the core takes only 12% damage and looks faded
  • Each nodule buds a fast clone cell every 4.5-6s (up to 10 alive, +3 per stage)
  • The core fires a big volley from the six shared patterns about every 2.9s
  • Up to 3 stages and 1 spread
From the Codex

A mass of the body's own cells dividing out of control. Some viruses, like Epstein-Barr (linked to nasopharyngeal carcinoma) and HPV, can help trigger cancers.

Fun fact: Oncolytic viruses are engineered to infect and burst cancer cells; one (T-VEC, a modified herpes virus) is approved to treat melanoma.

Lung Adenocarcinoma

Organ 2 · Lungs

A growing core that keeps healing and launches metastasis seeds. Any seed you don't shoot down takes root as a new nodule.

  • Hint: Kill the growing tumor. Shoot down metastases before they take root
  • 1 nodule at stage 1, +1 per stage
  • The core regrows 0.6% of its health per second, plus that much again for every living nodule
  • About every 3.6s it launches 2 metastasis seeds and fires a smaller volley
  • A seed drifts to a pulsing pink ring; if it lands it becomes a nodule (SEEDED)
  • Nodules bud clone cells, like in the Nasal Passage
  • Up to 4 stages and 2 spreads

Leukemia

Organ 3 · Bloodstream

A crowd of white blast cells that keep dividing. One gold leukemic stem cell hides among them: kill it and the whole leukemia collapses.

  • Hint: Cancer cells keep dividing. Find and kill the glowing stem cell
  • 7 blasts at stage 1, +3 per stage
  • Blasts divide every 2.4-3.6s (faster each stage), up to 32 at once; each new blast bursts out toward you
  • Auer rods: every 5-8s each blast that can see you within 400 throws a needle-like rod at you (6 damage)
  • The health bar counts the cells left (LEUKEMIA · N CELLS)
  • The stem cell spawns far from you with 3 blasts around it, backs away when you close in, circles, fires a small volley every 2.5-3.6s and buds a new blast every 2.2s
  • Escort: the first 6 blasts it buds circle it as a living wall; while 3 of them are within 130 of it, it takes 65% less damage (a gold ring shows it)
  • Blood thickening: the more blasts alive, the slower you move, up to 25% slower at 32 (it doesn't stack with other slows)
  • Up to 5 stages and 3 spreads
From the Codex

A cancer of blood-forming cells: immature white cells called blasts crowd the blood and bone marrow.

Fun fact: Many leukemias are thought to be driven by a small population of leukemic stem cells.

Lymphoma

Organ 4 · Lymph Node

A germinal centre in a crowd of identical lymphocytes. Most are harmless, but lymphoma clones hide among them, and the core is only soft while it swells to split.

  • Hint: Clones hide among harmless lymphocytes. Hit the germinal centre while it swells
  • 3 clones and 6 harmless lymphocytes at stage 1, +1 of each per stage (up to 8 clones and 10 lymphocytes)
  • The germinal centre takes 40% damage, but 160% while swelling
  • It swells about every 8.5s for 1.4s (SWELLING · HIT IT NOW), then splits into a ring of 16 shots and 2 more cells
  • Every 6s a pink scan pulse rolls out; clones it passes flicker their true face
  • Between swells it fires a small volley every 3.8s
  • Up to 6 stages and 4 spreads
From the Codex

A cancer of lymphocytes, the white cells that crowd lymph nodes. The cancerous cells look a lot like the healthy ones they came from, which is why it's diagnosed under the microscope.

Fun fact: The Epstein-Barr virus, which causes mononucleosis, is linked to several lymphomas, including Burkitt lymphoma.

Colon Carcinoma

Organ 5 · Gut

A shell game: the core hides down in one of several crypts, surfaces in another to fire, then dives again. Polyps on the walls drip caustic pools.

  • Hint: The tumor hides in its crypts. Watch where it surfaces, and dodge the polyps' pools
  • 4 crypts in a ring (5 from stage 3)
  • It can't be hurt while down in a crypt
  • When it dives, a ripple runs under the floor to its next crypt, plus a decoy ripple to another
  • The crypt flashes and a warning circle appears for 0.8s; bursting out hits you for 10 if you stand on it
  • It stays up for 4.6s, firing a big volley every 2.1s, then dives
  • 3 polyps at stage 1, +1 per stage (max 10)
  • Up to 7 stages and 4 spreads
From the Codex

A cancer of the gut lining. Most start as polyps, small growths on the wall of the colon, that turn cancerous over years; the cancer grows from the glands in the lining's crypts.

Fun fact: Removing polyps during a colonoscopy is one of the few ways to stop a cancer before it starts.

Colon Carcinoma in the Codex

Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Organ 6 · Liver

A liver tumor fed by satellite lobes through pulsing vessels. Kill every lobe before the first regrows and the core turns cirrhotic.

  • Hint: It regenerates from its lobes. Kill every lobe before they regrow, then strike
  • 3 lobes at stage 1, +1 per stage (up to 7); the bar reads FED BY N LOBES
  • While any lobe lives, the core heals 2% of its health per second and takes half damage
  • A destroyed lobe regrows after 9s
  • All lobes down at once: CIRRHOSIS for 8s, with no healing and 150% damage taken; then the lobes bud back one by one
  • Every 1.6s it takes turns between bile arcs and a bile spray; the bile flies fast, with its landing circle showing only about half a second
  • Up to 8 stages and 4 spreads
From the Codex

The most common liver cancer, growing from the liver's main cells, hepatocytes. Hepatitis B and C infections are among its biggest causes.

Fun fact: The liver can regrow from as little as a quarter of its mass, and this cancer borrows that talent.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma in the Codex

Multiple Myeloma

Organ 7 · Bone Marrow

A malignant plasma cell drifting in slow circles, firing spirals of Y-shaped antibodies that lock on to you and punching bone lesions into the floor.

  • Hint: Dodge the antibody spirals when they lock on, and keep off the bone lesions
  • The core drifts in a slow circle around the room
  • Every 3.4s it takes turns between an M-protein spiral and bone lesions
  • Starts with 1 myeloma clone (+1 per two stages) and buds another every 7s, up to 5 (+1 per two stages, max 8)
  • Up to 9 stages and 4 spreads
From the Codex

A cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow. One clone pumps out a single useless antibody (the M-protein) and stirs up bone-eating cells that punch holes in the bone.

Fun fact: Those 'punched-out' holes show up on X-rays of the skull like raindrops on a window.

Multiple Myeloma in the Codex

Glioblastoma

Organ 8 · Brain

A brain tumor rooted among glial nodes. Tendrils creep across the floor at you, and the core hops between nodes. Cut the nodes down to strand it.

  • Hint: Tendrils creep toward you and the core hops between nodes. Cut the nodes down
  • 4 glial nodes at stage 1, +1 per two stages (up to 7); the bar counts NODES
  • Tendrils creep out every 3.6s from the nearest node (2 nodes from stage 3), and from the core while it's rooted
  • About every 7s the core moves to a new spot by a node and comes up firing pulse rings
  • While rooted it fires a small volley every 3.4s
  • With every node destroyed, the core is stranded and takes 130% damage
  • Like every cell in the Brain, it takes 38% less damage (blood-brain barrier)
  • Up to 10 stages and 4 spreads
From the Codex

The most aggressive brain tumor, grown from glial cells. It sends thin tendrils deep into the surrounding brain, so it can never be fully cut out.

Fun fact: Its cells crawl along nerve fibres and blood vessels, sometimes crossing to the other half of the brain.
