The Codex

390 entries

Categories on the left, that category's entries in the middle, and the entry to read on the right.

  • “N / 350 discovered” in the header; each category shows found/total and turns mint when complete
  • Undiscovered entries read “???” with a silhouette and a hint on how to find them
  • Entries show REAL WORLD, FUN FACT and IN GAME (Game Mechanics: WHAT IT IS, TIP, HOW IT WORKS)
  • ‹ › page through what you've found; L1/R1 or Q/E flip categories
  • Opens at the entry you came for when reached from the drops guide
  • Opens after your first finished run
From the Codex

How aware the host's immune system is of you, from 0 to 100. It's the bar next to the eye at the top of the screen, and the more it fills, the harder the immune system fights back.

Fun fact: Stay out of fights for a few seconds and the bar drains on its own. Refuge rooms drop it fast.

Game Mechanics

40 entries

How the game's systems work, from Detection and Hunter Squads to Endless Game Mode and Pandemic responses.

  • Always readable, never “discovered”
  • Gated mechanics appear once they've been introduced in a run
  • Examples: Detection, Killer T Cells, Room Tiers, Strains & Lineage, Starting Deeper, Run Modifiers, Pandemic Game Mode Responses

Viruses

8 · Your virus

The playable viruses, the rival viruses and the virion itself.

  • Influenza A virus, Retrovirus, Filovirus, Halovirus, Rhinovirus, Norovirus, Adenovirus, Virion
  • Found by playing a virus, meeting it as a rival, or a mutation turning your lineage into it
From the Codex

An RNA virus that infects cells of the respiratory tract and causes the flu. Its genome is split into 8 separate RNA segments.

Fun fact: Subtypes are named by their surface proteins: H1N1 means hemagglutinin type 1 and neuraminidase type 1.

Influenza A virus in the Codex

Mutations

56 · Your virus

Every strain a generation can be born with.

  • Unlocks when you pick it for a new generation at the end of a run
  • Examples: Robust Capsid, Twin Genome, Glass Cannon, Loud and Proud
From the Codex

Gene duplication gives a virus a spare copy of a gene that can take on a new job.

Twin Genome in the Codex

Traits

35 · Your virus

Every trait mutation orbs can offer.

  • Unlocks when you pick it from a mutation orb
  • Examples: Lytic Burst, Fomite Ricochet, Incubation Period, Gene Drive
From the Codex

Lytic viruses burst open their host cell, releasing a flood of new virions at once.

Lytic Burst in the Codex

Power-ups

11 · Your virus

CRISPR-Cas9 and the ten elemental power-ups.

  • Unlocks when you pick it up in a fight
  • CRISPR-Cas9, Spike Shield, Chain Lightning, Fire Cross, Tidal Pulse, Gale Force, Stone Skin, Frost Aura, Mist Veil, Radiance, Umbra
From the Codex

Nerves and muscle cells fire with electrical signals; some viruses, like rabies, travel along nerves to reach the brain.

Chain Lightning in the Codex

Gear

5 · Your virus

The six gear slots, the real viral parts behind them, and the Viral Genome.

  • Capsid, Viral Envelope, Matrix Protein, Tail Fibers, Spike Protein
  • Unlocks when you find gear for that slot
From the Codex

The protein shell that encloses a virus's genome, built from repeating subunits called capsomeres. Most are icosahedral (20 triangular faces) or helical.

Fun fact: Capsids self-assemble: the proteins snap together on their own, like a puzzle that builds itself.

Capsid in the Codex

Immune Cells

57 · Inside the host

Every cell that fights you, from neutrophils to bosses and tumors.

  • Unlocks during a run: for most cells, landing one hit is enough
  • Examples: Neutrophil, Macrophage, Natural Killer Cell, Cytotoxic T Cell, Glioblastoma
From the Codex

A large white blood cell that eats pathogens and dead cells by phagocytosis, then shows pieces of them to other immune cells.

Fun fact: The name comes from Greek for "big eater".

Macrophage in the Codex

Organs & Tissue

11 · Inside the host

The eight organs plus mucus, cilia and alveoli.

  • Unlocks when you reach that part of the body in a run
From the Codex

The organs of breathing, where oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide leaves it.

Fun fact: Spread flat, the surface of the lungs' air sacs would cover roughly half a tennis court.

Lungs in the Codex

Rooms & Hazards

24 · Inside the host

Special rooms and the hazards built into the tissue.

  • Unlocks the first time it shows up in a run
  • Examples: Refuge, Receptor Puzzle, Immune Siege, Abyss Pits, Cilia Carpet, Synapse
From the Codex

When an infection is detected, the immune system recruits waves of white blood cells to the site, guided by chemical signals called chemokines.

Fun fact: Inflammation (redness, swelling, heat) is largely caused by immune cells flooding into infected tissue.

Immune Siege in the Codex

Treatments

9 · Inside the host

The medicine your host takes to fight you.

  • Unlocks when the host takes it during a run
  • Examples: Oseltamivir (Tamiflu), Influenza Vaccine, Interferon Shot, Radiation Therapy
From the Codex

When an infection makes someone sick enough, they see a doctor: antivirals, vaccines and immune-boosting drugs all help the body clear a virus.

Fun fact: Most viral infections have no cure; treatment usually helps the immune system win or slows the virus down while it does.

Medical Treatment in the Codex

Host Conditions

48 · Inside the host

Conditions a person or animal host can have, each changing the whole run.

  • Unlocks when you infect a host that has it
  • Examples: Severe Asthma, Type 1 Diabetes, White-Nose Syndrome, Hibernation Torpor
From the Codex

In asthma the airways swell and narrow; respiratory viruses are a common trigger of attacks.

A condition people can have.

Severe Asthma in the Codex

Molecules

18 · Inside the host

Proteins and molecules from the game, from antibodies to ribozymes.

  • Unlocks when it turns up in a run: a drop, a gene or an attack
  • Examples: Hemagglutinin (HA), Neuraminidase (NA), Histamine, RNA, Fusion Peptide
From the Codex

A Y-shaped protein made by B cells that binds to a specific part of a pathogen, marking it for destruction.

Fun fact: Your body can make billions of different antibodies.

Antibody in the Codex

Processes

11 · Inside the host

Biology in action: what happens to you and around you.

  • Unlocks when it happens to you in a run
  • Examples: Opsonization, Antigenic Drift, Antigenic Shift, Phagocytosis, Viral Latency
From the Codex

"Cell eating": a cell wraps its membrane around a particle or microbe, swallows it and digests it.

Fun fact: A single macrophage can swallow more than 100 bacteria before it wears out.

Phagocytosis in the Codex

Animal Hosts

19 · The world

Every animal you can infect, each with its own signature trait.

  • Unlocks when you infect one
  • Some only live around Pandemic Game Mode cities
  • Examples: Fruit Bat, Pig, Dromedary Camel, Kangaroo, Penguin
From the Codex

Bats are the natural reservoir of some of the deadliest viruses known: Marburg, Nipah, Hendra, rabies, and the ancestor of the 2003 SARS virus. Ebola is strongly suspected to come from bats too. Their immune systems tolerate viruses without the damaging inflammation that sickens other mammals.

Fun fact: Bats are the only mammals that truly fly; the fever-like heat of flight may help them keep viruses in check.

Fruit Bat in the Codex

Pandemic Cities

38 · The world

Every Pandemic city, with a real outbreak or event from its history.

  • Unlocks when you start a run there in Pandemic Game Mode
  • Shows country, population and continent, its standing policy and what it becomes once taken
