Skill tree

Skill Tree

How the Skill Tree Works

Three trees of 21 skills each (63 in all): Replication, Transmission and Persistence. Each has three columns, its own resource, an active skill with augments, and three capstones to choose from.

  9. Viral Genome

Offence. Copy faster than the immune system can respond: build Viral Load by hitting cells, then cash it in.

  • 21 skills, 53 ranks (53 points to max)
  • Columns: Copy Errors (crits & first hits), Viral Burst (active skill), Overload (Viral Load & kills)
  • Resource: Viral Load. Every hit adds a stack (up to 10). Stacks drain if you go 3 s without hitting.
  • Active skill: Viral Burst
  • Capstones (pick 1): Pandemic Spark, Shift Storm, Runaway Replication
From the Codex

A faster polymerase means more copies of the genome per hour.

Rapid Replication in the Codex

Movement and stealth. Spread fast, hit from where the immune system isn't looking, and keep Detection low.

  • 21 skills, 49 ranks (49 points to max)
  • Columns: Airborne (dash & Momentum), Aerosol (active skill), Unseen (stealth & ambush)
  • Resource: Momentum. Moving builds Momentum (up to 100). Standing still drains it quickly.
  • Active skill: Aerosolize
  • Capstones (pick 1): Contrail Mines, Pandemic Front, Invisible Strain
From the Codex

Each infected cell releases new virions that go on to infect its neighbours, so an infection can grow exponentially.

Fun fact: A single flu-infected cell can release thousands of new virions within hours.

Viral Spread in the Codex

Survival. Endure, recover and come back stronger: store damage you take and turn it into healing.

  • 21 skills, 49 ranks (49 points to max)
  • Columns: Capsid (health & armor), Rebound (active skill), Latency (Reservoir & last stands)
  • Resource: Reservoir. 40% of the damage you take is stored. Kills and room clears pour it back as healing.
  • Active skill: Seasonal Rebound
  • Capstones (pick 1): Fortified Provirus, Every Winter, Undying Strain
From the Codex

The protein shell that encloses a virus's genome, built from repeating subunits called capsomeres. Most are icosahedral (20 triangular faces) or helical.

Fun fact: Capsids self-assemble: the proteins snap together on their own, like a puzzle that builds itself.

Capsid in the Codex

Each tree has 6 rows and a capstone row. A row opens once you've spent enough points in that tree, and then every skill in it is open: no skill needs another one first.

  • Rows open at 0, 5, 8, 11, 14 and 17 points spent in that tree; the capstone row at 21
  • Every rank costs 1 skill point
  • Rows also need a virus level, finished generations, and for the deep rows the furthest organ reached (organ 2, 4, 6 and 8)
From the Codex

Your virus's experience and the skills it buys.

Fun fact: Switching to another capstone in the same tree is free: its point moves over.

Levels & Skill Tree in the Codex

Every tree has three columns: one for a playstyle on each side, and the tree's active skill with its augments down the middle.

  • The lines between skills are a guide to how the columns fit together; they don't gate anything

A skill's shape shows its kind.

  • Circle: a stat that's always on (dashed circle: a kill skill, a short buff each time you kill)
  • Rounded square: a conditional skill, only in a certain situation
  • Diamond: the tree's resource, or a skill that pays it off
  • Octagon: the active skill; hexagon: an augment that changes it
  • Square with a red edge: a risk skill, power with a cost
  • Shield crest: a capstone

Active skills

SKILL button

One active skill per tree, fired from its own SKILL button. Equip one at a time; augments in its tree change how it works.

  • Viral Burst (Replication), Aerosolize (Transmission), Seasonal Rebound (Persistence)

Resources, kill streaks and when-you-get-hit skills show as round icons under your health: a small number for the stacks and a clock hand that darkens the icon as its time runs out.

  • When-you-get-hit skills (Pressure Response, Startle Response, Inflammation) stack 10 times and last 20 s, each hit restarting the timer

The Viral Genome gear piece adds levels to skills while it's worn, even past a skill's maximum, and can lend you skills you haven't learned.
