Evolution

Virus Jumps

Becoming Another Virus

You don't buy viruses. You evolve into them. After each Infect Game Mode run you pick 1 of 3 mutations for the next generation (1 of 4 once you have a second virus), and some mutations turn the lineage into a different virus.

Unlocking by level

Level 4 / 8 / 12

New viruses open as your lineage levels up with XP from Infect Game Mode runs.

  • Influenza A: from the start
  • Retrovirus: level 4
  • Halovirus: level 8
  • Filovirus: level 12
  • The first time a virus opens, the very next mutation offer always includes a jump to it
  • Once a virus has been offered or played, it stays open

The viruses you can play, each with its own style.

Fun fact: A generation's mutation decides its virus: some mutations turn the lineage into a different one.

How jumps are offered

Mutation offers

Once another virus is open, there's a 40% chance that one of the three random offers is a jump to another unlocked virus.

  • Once a second virus is open you get 4 offers, and the left one always keeps your current virus, for players who want to stay
  • Half the time the parent's own mutation comes back to be inherited again (stacked); stacking a jump keeps that virus
  • Abandoned runs, Pandemic Game Mode and Endless Game Mode runs don't make a new generation
From the Codex

What your virus passes on to the next generation.

Fun fact: Inheriting the same strain again stacks it and makes it stronger.

Strains & Lineage in the Codex

The Family Tree shows one lane per virus, with every generation your lineage has been, in unlock order.

  • Lanes top to bottom: Influenza A, Retrovirus, Halovirus, Filovirus
  • Locked lanes show the level that opens them
  • Generations get flu-style names such as A/Brisbane/12/27 (H3N2), or RTV/M:C/Lagos/12 for Retrovirus
  • Each generation shows its virus ringed and lit in its mutation's colour, and the ring gets thicker each time the mutation is inherited again
  • Tap a virus's name at the start of its lane for its card: how it plays (passive, signature ability and ultimate) and, on the Real World tab, what it is in real life
