Health Bar

Top left

A card in your virus's colour, with its name and portrait, holds a thick health bar with the exact numbers on it; a trail drains after each hit so damage reads clearly.

  • Green above 60%, yellow above 30%, red below
  • Stolen Membrane shield and Glycan Armor appear as thin cyan and grey lines underneath
  • Below 30% health the screen edges pulse red
  • The portrait wears your equipped body skin
From the Codex

Extra health bars that soak damage before a cell's health.

Fun fact: Match your damage to the defence: electric for shields, explosive for armor.

Shields, Armor & Damage Types in the Codex

Extra Lives

Top left

An orange hourglass badge on your virus's portrait shows how many stored incubations you hold.

From the Codex

Ways to survive a killing blow.

Fun fact: The orange hourglass badge on your virus's portrait shows how many extra lives you have.

Extra Lives in the Codex

Class Pill

Top left

A coloured pill under your health bar shows your virus's live state.

  • Influenza A: the current Antigenic Drift shot type, or SHIFT · MIXED
  • Retrovirus: cells stored, allies, kamikazes and banked ultimates (icons and numbers when the line is too long), or LATENT · HIDDEN while Latency lasts
  • Filovirus: how many cells are bleeding
  • Halovirus: the current variant form (Swarm, Fury or Ghost) and its time left
From the Codex

The viruses you can play, each with its own style.

Fun fact: A generation's mutation decides its virus: some mutations turn the lineage into a different one.

Virus Classes in the Codex

The organ's name and how many of its fights you've cleared, e.g. "x/y fights".

  • Endless Game Mode shows the set number instead
  • The label takes the organ's colour and icon; in Pandemic Game Mode a city's weather shows beside the name, with an arrow for the wind
From the Codex

Each organ is a map of connected rooms, different every run.

Fun fact: Bigger rooms hold more cells, spread around the whole room, and always fight in several waves.

Rooms & Waves in the Codex

Detection Eye

Immune panel

The eye meter tracks how aware the immune system is of you, from 0 to 100.

  • Calm green, wary yellow from 50, hunted red and pulsing from 75
  • Ticks at 35, 60 and 80 mark the hunter squads; at 100 Killer T cells come for you
  • At 75+ the host may take a treatment
  • Cools after 5 s with nothing alarming it
From the Codex

Infected cells and immune sentinels release alarm signals (interferons and cytokines) that warn neighbours and call in the immune system.

Fun fact: Many of the symptoms of being sick, like fever and aches, are caused by these alarm signals, not by the virus itself.

Detection in the Codex

Immune System Level

Level 13 unlock

An L-number badge on the immune panel's top edge (L4 IMMUNE) shows how much the immune system has learned.

  • Rises with every organ you reach and every Killer T generation you destroy
  • Turns from green to red as it climbs
From the Codex

Adaptive immunity: the host studies how you attack and grows up as the infection goes on, so the same trick works less and less.

Fun fact: Mixing your shot types (or switching with Antigenic Shift) keeps it from ever pinning you down.

The Immune System Learns in the Codex

Cytokine Storm Meter

From organ 4 (Lymph Node)

A thin bar with a hurricane icon under Detection shows how far ahead your build is.

  • Past its mark at 30%, the immune system sends crimson adapted cells
From the Codex

The immune system's answer to a runaway build: when you kill ordinary cells too easily, or barely get scratched, it starts sending cells built to resist you.

Fun fact: Kill the crimson ones first: they're the ones keeping the fight fair.

Cytokine Storm in the Codex

A flame shows the Immune Alert level, and a hexagon counts the nucleotides gathered this run.

  • Alert rises one step every 20 s; each step gives new cells +6% health and makes hits on you 4% stronger
From the Codex

The immune system ramping up the longer the infection lasts.

Fun fact: Moving through an organ quickly keeps every fight a little easier.

Immune Alert in the Codex

Minimap

Right column

Shows the rooms you've been in and the ones next to them.

  • White is your room, grey is cleared, red is visited but unfinished
  • Rooms you've been in are drawn in their real shape, with islands as holes; rooms you haven't entered yet are plain boxes
  • Special rooms have coloured outlines; tiered rooms an outer border in their tier colour
  • The boss room is double-size with a skull, dimmed once beaten
  • Sealed doors show in their gene's colour; found drop shafts get a teal dot
  • The map's panel takes the organ's colour
From the Codex

Each organ is a map of connected rooms, different every run.

Fun fact: Bigger rooms hold more cells, spread around the whole room, and always fight in several waves.

Rooms & Waves in the Codex

Genes Carried

Right column

A badge on the minimap's bottom edge lists the genes you're carrying, e.g. GENES: FUSION · MUCOLYTIC.

From the Codex

Each organ seals one door until you carry the right gene.

Fun fact: Genes also give a passive bonus, like mucus or clots no longer slowing you.

Genes, Sealed Doors & Key Guardians in the Codex

Boss Bar

Top centre

The boss's name and health bar across the top of the play window.

  • A boss's bar is cyan while its shield holds, grey while its armor lasts, then orange
  • Key guardians, Killer T packs, rivals and tumors use it too
From the Codex

The giant immune cell guarding the way to the next organ.

Fun fact: From the third organ on, every boss also has a signature skill on its own random clock, aimed at you.

Bosses in the Codex

Wave Pill

Top centre

Shows WAVE n / total, cells left, and one pip per wave.

  • It turns from mint to red on the final wave
From the Codex

Each organ is a map of connected rooms, different every run.

Fun fact: Bigger rooms hold more cells, spread around the whole room, and always fight in several waves.

Rooms & Waves in the Codex

Event Timer

Top centre

During a Siege or Lysis Chamber, a countdown pill shows the time left and what's happening.

  • Turns red and pulses in the last 5 seconds
  • In Pandemic Game Mode, Lagos's NEPA Power Cuts get a pill too: BLACKOUT IN for the 5 s before the lights go out, then BLACKOUT while they're out
From the Codex

When an infection is detected, the immune system recruits waves of white blood cells to the site, guided by chemical signals called chemokines.

Fun fact: Inflammation (redness, swelling, heat) is largely caused by immune cells flooding into infected tissue.

Immune Siege in the Codex

Power-up Timers

Top centre

Each running power-up lists its name and seconds left, one per line.

  • CRISPR gets its own countdown in shifting rainbow colours
From the Codex

Short bursts of elemental power, and the rare CRISPR.

Fun fact: Different power-ups run at the same time, and they follow you into the next room.

Power-ups in the Codex

A red pill warns when the immune system has started resisting one of your shot types.

From the Codex

The slower, targeted immune response that learns the specific features of a pathogen and remembers them.

Fun fact: Vaccines work by training this system without the real disease.

Adaptive Immunity in the Codex

Tumor Tracker

Bottom left

Counts down to the tumor's next growth or spread, with its stage and spread count.

From the Codex

Cancer growing in the host while you're there, and what happens if you leave it.

Fun fact: Kill tumors early: they only get worse, and they follow you if you don't.

Tumors & Metastasis in the Codex

Action Buttons

Bottom right

DASH, your signature ability, ULT and SKILL in a staggered cluster, each filled with its colour: a dark sweep covers the part still charging, and a bright ring pulses round it once it's ready.

  • The signature, ultimate and skill buttons also glow and pop as they become ready; DASH only gets the ring
  • Halovirus's signature button wears a bead wheel of its variant forms
  • When your skill comes back, a ring of its colour ripples out from the SKILL button; with Second Season a small badge counts the charges ready
From the Codex

Your three special buttons on the right.

Fun fact: Save the ultimate for bosses and big waves.

Signature, Ultimate & Skill in the Codex

Skill-tree effects that stack show as round icons in a row under your health, each in its tree's colour.

  • Shown for Viral Load, Momentum, Reservoir, Replication Frenzy, Pressure Response, Slipstream, Startle Response and Inflammation, once learned
  • A small number counts the stacks (Momentum's points, the health held in the Reservoir); Slipstream has none
  • Timed effects have a clock hand that goes round and darkens the icon as the time runs out; Viral Load's counts down the 3 s before its stacks start to drain
  • Viral Load, Momentum and the Reservoir stay on screen once learned (Momentum and the Reservoir darken as they empty); the others show only while they're up
  • An icon pulses when it pays off: a full Viral Load or Momentum, or the Reservoir pouring out healing
From the Codex

Your virus's experience and the skills it buys.

Fun fact: Switching to another capstone in the same tree is free: its point moves over.

Levels & Skill Tree in the Codex

In rooms bigger than the screen, cells out of view show as a pulsing red glow on the screen's edge, with an arrow pointing at them.

  • Orange when a boss is among them
  • Cells in the same direction share one glow, which grows bigger and brighter the more of them there are and the closer they are
  • Up to 8 glows at once
  • The arrows keep clear of the HUD's cards, buttons and skill icons, the tumor card and Codex notices
